Why does the back hurt?

The spine, along with the surrounding structures (muscles, joints, intervertebral discs, etc.), forms our backbone. As the name suggests, the function of the backbone is to support us. If the spine is strong and healthy, there is no need to fear back pain. Back pain can have countless causes, but it is rarely due to a serious illness or injury. The spine is our pillar or supporting beam that works while sitting, standing, and walking. The spine is often the first area to show signs of fatigue.

Most people experience back pain at least once in their life, while for many, it becomes a frequent or chronic issue. Fortunately, most back pains are treatable, as they are nonspecific pain. This means that the cause is not a specific disease affecting the spine but rather a problem that arises from microtrauma and/or the combined effect of many different factors.

The pain can be in a specific point or a broader area, arise in certain positions or movements, and sometimes radiate to the leg (or arm).

If the pain is nonspecific, it is difficult to find a single cause. As a result, fear and uncertainty arise, leading to repeated visits to different doctors and health specialists, and the pain becomes chronic, as finding a solution seems impossible.

We cannot choose our age or genetic background. However, we can choose to be in good physical shape and quit smoking. We can also take care of our mental health and ensure a balance between sitting and movement at work, with postures alternating with relaxation.

Do you have any factors that contribute to back pain? What could you do to eliminate or reduce the impact of this factor?
